Why I Started Sharp Works Digital

After 25 years building software for large companies, I started Sharp Works Digital to help local businesses in South Central PA get real technical help — without the enterprise price tag or the twelve-month contract.

I’ve worked in tech for 25 years doing just about everything. I’ve built web applications, mobile apps, large enterprise systems, and third-party integrations. I’ve been an individual contributor, a team lead, a “technical supervisor”, a manager, a staff engineer, and most importantly a mentor. All of it has been rewarding, but something was always missing — the chance to work in my own community and help local businesses and new entrepreneurs like me grow through smart use of technology.

While I grew up in Baltimore, my family and I have lived in South Central PA for over 20 years and we consider it home. We’ve been blessed to get to know so many locals who own their own businesses, from hair salons to HVAC companies to dog groomers, and they are some of the hardest working people I’ve ever met. Some of them have Facebook pages, others have simple websites, but it’s really clear (and rightly so) that they don’t have time to think about technology.

That’s why I started Sharp Works Digital.

It isn’t that small businesses don’t care

Every business owner I’ve met knows their website could be better. They know they should be doing something with email, or search, or that pile of data sitting in two systems that don’t talk to each other. They’ve heard of Customer Relationship Management, but no one has ever shown them how to put it into practice. And they have no way to measure the return on anything they spend.

And, honestly, who can blame them? They just don’t have the time. When you’re running a business, your attention goes to customers and revenue — as it should. Technology is the thing you’ll get to next month, and next month never comes.

So when it finally does get addressed, it’s usually in a hurry, by whoever was cheapest, and the result sits there quietly underperforming for years with some monthly subscription plan that slowly creeps up in price.

And it isn’t that they don’t want help

When a small business does go looking for real technical help there are two general outcomes — insanely expensive and not worth it, or a subscription-based platform that charges you a monthly fee for features that you don’t even have time to figure out. Custom development, systems integration, a genuine technology strategy — these get quoted at numbers that make sense for a company with a hundred employees and no sense at all for a company with nine.

Most tech shops also want a big contract signed before anyone will talk to you. A retainer. A twelve-month commitment. A discovery phase that costs more than the problem. And subscription platforms are often a money grab — difficult to use, with an upcharge to talk to a human being.

I want to break that mold. If you need an hour of my time, buy an hour. If a conversation is all it takes to point you in the right direction, then that’s what it cost you. If it turns into something ongoing, great — but that should be your decision after you’ve seen the work, not a condition of getting started.

What I actually want to do

I want to take the technology burden off your desk.

That might mean building you a site that finally conveys what your business is worth. It might mean getting your customers a way to pay you online that actually works. Or it might mean sitting in on a decision as a fractional CTO so you don’t spend thousands of dollars on the wrong thing.

I’ve built systems at a scale small businesses will never need. That experience isn’t wasted here — it’s exactly what lets me tell you which ninety percent of it you can safely skip, and where there’s real value.

I’ve spent 25 years making big companies richer. I’d like to spend the next stretch helping my neighbors.

If something here sounded uncomfortably familiar, send me an email. No pitch, no contract, no funnel. Just tell me what’s bugging you and I’ll tell you what I think.
